Brisbane's largest handmade collective, BrisStyle, is joining forces with the Toy Society to co-ordinate a MEGA Toy Drop throughout the South East and beyond during the month of May. Hundreds of toys with notes to "take me home" are set to be anonymously tied to trees, lamp posts or left in other prominent places throughout the immediate Brisbane region, and with BrisStyle's networks reaching a global audience drops are set to be made the world over.

Over the past months I've been working my way back to blogland and am please to unveil my "new look" blogerooni. After taking a sabbatical to focus on the success of the BrisStyle Indie Markets I've now found a nice little balance to be able to commune with all my kindred creative spirits again more regularly onlin (*big sigh*).

Lordy me it's BiDM time!

Oh wordy lordy me Chenille it's but a matter of days...yes days to the first BrisStyle Indie Designers Market of the year and here I am only coming out of the handmade ( rather nice silky oak ) wood panelling now!

Where have I been? ( I hear you ask ) With all those promises of Marketeer lists! (I hear you ask again) Well fortunately I have been held captive by my fave obsession BrisStyle and have been over at Bris Central helping to organise the markets as well as write a few blog post on the BrisStyle blog.

In between being whisked away to those cloudy skies to fly the hoards of handmade hunting heroine's to Brisbane for a weekend of fun and frivolity at the BiDM. ( ok some may have been coming for other things but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a few familiar faces at the BiDM !)

Mugs, Markets , Memories and More.....

Yes indeedy do it's been a long time between drinks but all for good cause!

In a nutshell...or rather a collage.... life has been full of mugs, markets and memories......

MUGS: Working over the Festive season always brings fun and joy into an otherwise crazy time of year. Seeing everyone off to visit their loved ones, packing up their families for holidays' and many still travelling for work over Christmas. It brings everyone together as well that you work with as we're all in the same boat having to be away from our families, so of course there's always going to be some shenanigans afoot!

So to the delight of not only the crew but the passengers at the back of the plane, Sandy (on the right) not only asks if we'd like some REAL loose leaf tea but proceeds to pull out of her work bag that larger than life ceramic teapot!!

We were so excited and so were the German film crew and a couple of old truckers who were on the road ( so to speak) for Christmas and the hot brew, stripey teapot and real ceramics mugs made for a back galley tea party to rival no others!

MARKETS: The BrisStyle Indie Markets "went off" in it's own inimitable style at Christmas full of colour, smiles and a vibe that you just can't bottle! It's something that has stayed with me over Christmas, that vibe, and it's a rarity that you don't find in many large groups let alone market places.

I think it comes down to the care, honesty and respect that the BrisStyle Marketeers not only have for each other but for all the amazing people who come along to shop and hang out for the day. It's the vibe of like minded souls sharing their passion for handmade...as well as a good natter and lot's of laughs.

Thanks BrisStyle and thanks to everyone who came along to make the day another success for the BrisStyle Indie Markets!

MEMORIES: ...and there were some very sweet ones too xox Catching up with the fab gals I went through training school with, taking a few r&r escapades away and soaking up the company of my sister Amanda and her family from Hong Kong. Did you know that "Bakugan" are the guardians of the "Littlest Pet Shops"? Something I learnt from watching Charlie and Will play ever so tolerantly with their lil' sister Gracie.

& MORE: This year I'll be turning my focus to the amazing world of BrisStyle. The Market have gone from strength to stregth and this year sees some very exciting developments indeed.

So as well as continuing with "breathing new life into old treasures" through my Etsy shops I'll be in fulll swing BrisStyle Indie Market ( BiM) mode.

So stay tuned for an inside look this year of all the talented creative souls that make the BIM's come to life....

Honiara or bust!

It certainly has been a bit of a balancing act over the past couple of months between my crafty world on the ground and my equally crafty one in the air!

Bumps, dust, more bumps, delays, more dust, lightning, wind, more dust,more delays and then there has been the odd jaunt to a tropical Island! What the? Yep it makes all those other bits fade away when the opportunity to go to an exotic clime comes your way, and it did!

Honiara in the Solomon Islands was our tropical destination right off the top of Australia. Very humid, very green and very serene...even with the odd military personage wandering around with a largish gun or two!

We certainly made the most of the trip especially Marcy who's brother Sheldy is based there with the ADF. He arrived in his helicopter in full fatigues to get his "care parcel" from home which was such a warm and fuzzy hallmark kinda moment!

"nook" where Ruby's been!

Built in the 1930's the home for Brisbane's most enchanting new retail store has been lovingly brought to life by Michelle Gillies and her partner Jules over the past few months. The house and neighbouring boarding house are steeped in history with 3 generations of Jules family breathing new life into them over the years.

nook is the end product of Michelle and Jules vision to bring some eco friendly, vintage and handmade uniqueness to Brisbane's West End - in fact they have really tapped into their own brand of contemporary cool style - warm and open with a distinctive vintage vibe.

Michelle is of course famous for bringing "Pedrosprout" felt booties to the world. Her gorgeous designs are constantly in demand worldwide and so she has set up her sewing machine behind the counter so she can create away til her hearts delight

Not so tonight as the people tumbled in to celebrate nook's official launch. Michelle was busy wrapping up the constant flow of purchases while Jules played the consummate host.

Ooh what a lovely night it was to catch up!

During the week nook aquired some Ruby goodness with a collection of one of a kind Vintage Fabric covered button rings made from original buttons from the 50's, 60's and 70's. They look pretty fabbo nestled in with all the handmade creations from Brisbane and beyond.

The Resonance of Bricolage by a travel and treasure hunting Bricoleur

Well it's on again but this time bigger and better than before. Brooke the new curator of Echo's Gallery and shop at Reverse Garbage has not only transformed the entire supply area into a user friendly recycled shopping heaven, but is using her expertise to really bring a contemporary edge overall.

I've been really impressed with the professionalism, new direction and drive that Reverse Garbage is taking. They are now sourcing a diverse range of eco friendly artists, crafters and designers to make the new look gallery area a thriving local enviro hub.

So I'm really excited about this latest exhibition which I only got involved in at the last minute. It has been the perfect opportunity to utilize many of the preloved treasures I acquired from the BrisStyle Craft Swap a few months back. They already had a sense of community stamped on them from the bringing together of kindred spirits at the swap, so they were the perfect raw ingredients to use.

I also wanted to set myself a challenge to use as many materials as possible that I had immediately on hand at home in my studio ( pretty easy my friends may think knowing the eclectic array of "unsual , different and noice even" curios in my lil' place ) Anyhoo yes it was pretty easy to do with only one trip around the corner to Mad Monnies for some replacement jump rings and crimps.

So here's the my official Artists Statement and and all the goodies below. They still have the ruby Red signature "Recycled Vintage Swish" tag but this time with a very natural and earthy feel.

Well this little cookie has been fulfilling her Air Hostess duties and studying like a banchee to pass her 6 monthly Emergency Procedures exams and practicals. It's not all tea and cupcakes you know - boo hoo!

The left hand side of my brain sure had a work out. Crikey have been so used to using the right hand side lately that I think it went into shock- poor brain!

Anyhoo it was all good - after yelling out a few evacuation commands whilst donning my life jacket, then learning why it's just not safe for one do their nails on board, then sitting the final and not-so-scary-after-all-exam it was all over - yahoo!

...actually there was a lot more involved but not nearly as glamorous as this vintage pic above!

Oh so nice to be back in Crafting Heaven - for a few hours at least.

While on I'm the giving trail I must say a very, very big "thanks a bunch" for all the splendiferous BrisStylish gifts that made it my way over the past couple of weeks ........

An absolutely fabulous book on Macrame to rekindle my ever lurking passion for a spot of woven 70's pleasure. Also THE snaziest ACEO's ever featuring a couple of Ali's signature "vintage ladies" contemplating all those high falutin' things that well only models from the 60's and 70's can!

All from my gorgey not- so -vintage friend Miss Ali from Jellygnite xox

The notebooks down the side are from Jellygnite's latest collection of eco friendly vintageness. For all the quirky tales that abound involving cereal boxes ( yep you heard right ) pop on over here to get your Jelly fix.

Another sweet surprise came from Miss Amanada from Twinkle Star Art!

Not only did she include one of her very latest Matryoska Doll cards bit the Pièce de résistance came wrapped in fine tissue paper with it's very own Matryoska Doll sticker.

A personally signed copy of Amanda's now famous BrisStyle girls Illustration! Oh my tears and as my niece says "princess claps" - Amanda you really know how to shine your Twinkley goodness and make a gal feel real spesh xox Thank you xox

Then there's all the goodies that begun appearing a few weeks ago in my letter box! All from my same-streetish neighbour Miss Teneale from Wicked Child Designs.

Oh my the first was a stash of "get well" organic orange flavoured very rich, very dark, very moorish chocolate with lil' note and purple fresh flower - all for Breakfast!

Then there arrived an even bigger parcel with one of Teneale's special Lady Beetle pegs holding it closed. Inside was a stash of herbal teas - hmmmm Chai hmmm - and more...wait for it organic chocolate. OMG how lucky can a gal be? Actually even more luckier actually as I spied (gulp) my very own Red Riding Hood coin purse. GET OUT!

My head is still spinning as I type (probably due to all the cocoa still floating around in my system).

What generous girly BrisStylin' friends I have thank you so very much for making my Birthday extra spesh xox

Although technically still on Hol's I've been doing some Air Hostess moonlighting for a few days. It's all been rather fun really with a bit of a jaunt down to Melbourne town.

As per my usual routine, I hotfooted it out of my lil' hotel quick smart to pack in as much as I could on my wintery layover. First stop a Coffee in the wonderful Block Arcade to really make me feel that I was indeed in the City of Style....and great Coffee!

Several Tram stops later I found myself in Gertrude St Fitzroy where I meandered my way along a swag of smaller vintage shops, galleries and cafes 'til I found the Mecca for all things preloved "The Lost and Found Market" on Smith Street.

"Oh wordy lordy me Janelle" this was truly Kitsch heaven at it's best! Everything that your preloved/vintage/ antique even, heart could imagine - even buttons (sigh)

If this is your "thang" then you can't miss a trip to Lost and Found's new loaction at the top of Smith Street, just down from the very mod-ern Macca's on the corner. Brilliant!

Gosh I'm not sure about you but I'm exhausted after reliving all that fun and frivolity!
Time to rustle up some more organic choccy and a chai me thinks in the morning - what will you be having?

"Wow what a week" Post #2

...and the excitement continues thanks to the lovely Laura at the Courier Mail who has totally embraced the new wave of cool craft and wants to tell the world about it! She''ll be doing more features in the Shopping section of the Courier each Tuesday so keep an eye out for loads of amazing local talent!

The gorgeous Christine from Little Chrissy tee'd this one up as part of a feature on the BrisStyle Indie Designer's Markets. The next one of course not being until December the 5th so Laura made mention of the Racecourse Rd Street Party on the 20th Sept that most of the BrisStylettes will be taking part in. ( more on that in a couple of weeks)

The photographer had been to our home before for a story on Andy so found it easy to find the "studio" behind the wall of trees at the front of our place. It was so easy to have a chat and a laugh too even in the midst of fighting off that dreaded lurgy that took a partial liking to our tropical surrounds and wanted to make itself at home here last week.

Slapping on a bit of make-up helped as well as donning my new 6O' s vintage "ruby red" frock from the gorgeous Anna at La Bella Donna in Morningside - te he!

Kristina Snerling of Tiny Concepts was the other star of the Article and will be at Mathilda's Market in Brisbane this Sunday 19th July with all her gorgeous dolls and goodies.

My Very favourite designer ( and Boutique Market Neighbour ) of THE coolest collars for Dogs and Cats is Alison from Pretapawte! The collar above was also featured in the Courier Article on Tuesday too.

I placed an order with Alison on Sunday and am eagerly awaiting two new "outfits" for my very large but very snuggley Irish Wolfhound X's Minnie, the strawberry blonde ( that's her special "Pressed Flowers" design above.)

...and Bella the stunning brunette and white - and that's her special ruby "Red and Black Polka Dot" design!

Looking forward to grabbing a copy of the Courier next week to see who else has been featured. Could it be the fantabulous Sophie from Strat Designs? Stay tuned..........

Firstly a huge THANK YOU to everyone who popped in to say hello here and at the actual Boutique Markets on Sunday xox

Boy was it a hoot with everyone soaking up (inhaling) all the luscious chocolate and coffee on hand all at Portside Wharf! Yum!

And the crowds that descended on the actual markets were phenomenal. So many experiencing "cool craft" like they've never known it before and vowing to return for more next month.

All the Marketeers turned it on in the warm winter heat with their stalls looking amazing against the backdrop of the white marquees.

Many thanks to the gorgeous Leasl, Rachael and Kerrie who not only run and organise the markets but are constantly on hand supporting all the retailers with those ever essential much needed food and loo breaks!

What an amazing weekend it was at the very first

BrisStyle Indie Designers Market!

Thank you to the crowds of people who came out on this glorious crisp winter's day to support the local artist, designers and crafters from the fantabulous BrisStyle Etsy Street Team.

Even though the weather had well and truly cooled down the Market really was the "Hottest place in Brisbane for Handmade!"

It was so lovely to see so many familiar faces as well as many lovely blog followers and of course meet so many newcomers to the BrisStyle phenomenon.

It really is heartwarming to see how our Brisbane crafting community is so interlinked and supportive - thank you xox

We were supporting two charities on the day:

The New Farm Neighbourhood Centre

and the St Augustine's Church Hall Grounds Restoration Fund

raising over $400!

If you visited the ever so stylish Boutique Markets at Portside this month you would have seen, tasted and sighed over the devine petitie gourmet cupcakes from Louise of Tabitha's place.

It won't be a long drink between cupcakes for Louise's fans as they will be able to satisfy their cravings at the BrisStyle Indie Designers Market on the 4th July -yay!

Just Follow the aroma's of the freshly brewing Di Bella Coffee and you'll find cupcakes to make your taste buds sing. Situated in the ever so retro canteen area of St Augustine's Hall, you'll be able to sit and soak up the atmosphere of the outdoor stalls or take your travel proof cupcake with you throughout the stalls.

.....and how do I know they're travel proof ? Well I had THE most delicious Apple, Maple and Pecan with Maple icing and Toffee Shards (the maple icing twirl and toffee garnish was bigger than the cake itself ... OMG I'm getting a sugar rush just remembering it) while looking at all the delectable stalls at the Boutique Markets.

I tell you it was enough to fuel me through the day and into next week - should have brought a dozen. Speaking of which make sure that you get in early as Louise sold out by 11am at the BM. Better still pop online and place an order!

Ok now off to find that bottle of maple syrup.......

1. When I was 4 the only way my Mother could get me home from visiting all the friends in my street was to yell "Roger Ramjet" from the balcony...and I would come running!

3. My mother once wore a handmade Ruby Red ensemble made form upholstery fabric to a dinner party only to find their entire furniture covered in the very same fabric
(hence the name of my studios)

4.When I grow up I would really love to know exactly what I should be doing with all the "stuff" that I have collected (hoarded) over the years - especially all the upholstery fabric

5. When I grow up I'd also love to be a "seat filler" at the Oscars. It's a real job and some one's got to do it but I best check the decor out before I decide on an outfit to wear in case I clash ...or worse resemble it!

6. I am really proud to say that I am blessed with the most caring friends, family and peers who never cease to amaze me with their talent, humour and unconditional love

7. The more people I meet in my travels and here at play through blogland and BrisStyle I am certain in my belief that in some way we are all universally connected.

It's BiDM time! That's the BrisStyle Indie Designer's Market of course!

Yep you guessed it....with less than a month to go this lil' Scooter Gal has once again converted her Ruby Red Studios into Market Central.

This year the BrisStyle Market team has expanded to include the expertise of the talented Sophie Strat- Ferrier of Strat Designs who has been an invaluable inspiration to the new look BrisStyle Indie Designer's Markets.

The applications began rolling in last month with over half arriving within the first 3 days with everyone ensuring that they had nabbed the perfect possie in our fab new venue.

After the huge success of our Christmas Market last December we decided that we needed a bigger venue to host our rapidly growing group of BrisStyle designers, artists and crafters. So we were delighted when the Church council allowed us to use their uber retro hall at St Augustine's Church just down the road from our original digs.

Situated in the heart of Racecourse Rd, Hamilton the hall and grounds will be the perfect location for over 55 local Etsy stores to set up shop in a boutique style atmosphere. This means that this years event will have twice as many gorgeous stalls than the Christmas Markets.

Although right in the heart of the Cafe strip there will be Gourmet Cupcakes and Coffee along with cool acoustic music to warm our winter spirits!

OK so that's what I'm telling myself (yep, you now me better than that...singing to myself at the top of my voice) At the beginning of the week the weather report SAID it would be sunny tomorrow but today it says something else. So I'm going to stick with the first forecast and run with that - with all my wet weather gear in kit just in case!

This week the skies have been filled with all sorts of weather - fog, wind,rain, and clear air bumpy bits which is not pretty when you have to suddenly take your seat immediately and lodge yourself in between passengers mid cabin with a tea pot in one hand and a serving bat in the other.(Phew) It is a bit nice though as I get to sit and chat to the passengers I'm samwiched between and give them extra tea - artfully...and very carefully between bumps!

So it has been nice playing earthling today crafting away in a stable non moving environment. I'm on a swivel chair so I can move around a bit if I get "air sick" though. Not actually airsick as in airsickness, but more like home sick for the air!

Ok enough of that silliness! TOMORROW I am going to be playing with quite a few BrisStylettes as well as many other talented Designers at the Young Designers Market at Southbank.

I'll have quite a few new designs including my new Ruby 2 "Lolly Bracelets" featuring an array of vintage buttons combined with new chunky resined vintage beach images! They are sooo yummy!

Market to Market - A Sydney and Melbourne adventure

When my roster arrives for the coming month it’s always with anticipation. Do I have my 3 requested days off and what other duties have the "Roster Gods" afforded me. This month it was a mix of day trips and the rest all reserve (on call) days. For some this could mean an upset to the little routine that life as a Cabin Crew member is accustomed to these days but for me I always see the adventure and opportunity – where will I be sent, who will I meet, how much can I pack in?

So when I got a last minute call out for a 3 day trip to Sydney and Melbourne my imagination was spiked. With no family in town to catch up with this time it meant a day to play. And play I did at the thing I love most - searching and discovering the latest in handmade and vintage and meeting the people and collectors behind the products. What better place to do this but go straight to the roots of handmade to the premier weekend Markets in Sydney and Melbourne.

Paddington Markets, Sydney

The challenge as always is to pack in as much fun as possible between “wake up” and “pick up” so a quick Google on the Internet helped me plan my excursion.

So my journey began with a brisk walk up the hill to Paddington – stopping for a vegie juice on the way.

My path lead me out on Oxford Street right opposite the new Paddington Reservoir development – a very impressive blend of contemporary and historic featuring the excavated heritage listed remains of the original reservoir.

Only a few minutes’ walk up the street and I was at the entrance of the bustling Paddington Markets– a blend of vintage, handmade and imported curios.

The layout hadn’t changed that much with the majority of the vintage stalls running along the right hand side of the church and the fashion section to the left. Some vintage stalls were tucked up behind the fashion section on the far right and really worth the look.

Many of the stalls were the ones that I had spied at the Bondi Markets the week before so it was nice to have a chance at a second look. My favourite being fashion label Zephyr and Jennifer’s signature “Shirred Dress” which had a very vintage, French feminine look to it but made from the softest cotton – totally gorgeous

The other stalls that took my fancy were ceramicist Samantha Robinson’s bowls and mugs, Judith Dawson’s Creature’s and Icon’s framed pictures, Dorte Bundt’s laser cut Antlitz Design jewellery and ever so groovy Vellocet jumpsuits by James Kellas.

After grabbing a banana and mango soy smoothie and taking in the sounds of the two entertainers ( very smooth themselves I may add with their quirky interpretations on classic rock songs) I headed off on the next leg of my adventure.

Midnight Oil have a famous line in one of their songs “catch a bus to Bondi” – something I did on a regular basis when I was based in Sydney. So the #380 bus that runs to and from the city to the Eastern Suburbs was the perfect choice of transport to get to Museum Station. Really I could have walked all the way to central but time was of the essence!

Finders Keepers Market, Eveliegh

From Museum Station platform I changed trains at Central to board a train to Redfern. The trip from Paddo to Redfern Station was only 30ish minutes and the walk down to Carriage Works where the Finders Keepers Markets new venue is was only 8 minutes from there – very quick!

Finders Keepers started at 12pm and to my delight the Farmers markets held in the same heritage listed complex was still on. It was indeed coffee time and I got my fix of organic coffee from a buzzing stall just as I walked in. I also got a couple of the yummiest organic apples to get me through the injection of handmade goodness that awaited me.

Ok here is where I admit to being a total nerd again – he he! I’m certain that it wasn’t the caffeine but I was full of excitement – adrenaline even before I entered the site of the actual Finders Keepers Market. I really think it was because I knew the calibre of the wares that awaited me and that I would be amongst likeminded souls.

It’s a weird phenomenon and only something that I’m recognising as being a Light bulb going on to make me aware that I am really doing something I love by surrounding myself in these environments. In a strange way it also gives me conviction that my own journey with handmade is the right one. I think it is what fuels my addiction to the BrisStyle Google Group forum, definitely our monthly meet ups and most certainly our own BrisStyle Indie Designer Markets.

Ok back to Finders Keepers.

As soon as I walked through the doors I knew that these markets have an edge very different from the norm. Hip, cool and utterly desirable are words that instantly came to mind – but where to start. First stop was at the Oxfam stall – just to get centred again. Here I joined in the throngs of people filling out postcards and cardboard coat hangers to leave my mark on ethical shopping.

After meandering through the sea o people, chatting to stallholders and learning that many had come up from Melbourne for the event I ran into a familiar face. The gorgeous Kristen Doran who came to Brissy for the S&C show, told me that she was having a fab time – the Friday night part of the market being very successful and the 12-10 stint that day looking the same.

When I looked around I soon found other familiar stalls that I had admired from afar – Lola & Baily awesome jewellery and shadow puppet wall art, Shannon from auntie cookie’s loveable fabric creations, Victoria Mason’s jewellery featuring her famous silver pencil sharpening pendant and all the scrumptious goodies from Leeloo’s collective.

Much to my delight there was also loads of people doing BIG jewellery ( sigh) My fav being the amazing resin jewellery designs from Melbourne designer Bamboo Chutney – now there’s a gal after my own big bold resined heart!

By then it was time to hotfoot( train) it back to get ready for my 1 leg working to Melbourne.

Victorian Art Centre, Makers Market, Melbourne

With only a window of Opportunity of an hour in the morning I hotfooted it down the road to make my way to the Victorian Arts Centre Maker’s Market. The day was overcast but surprisingly mild. Walking along the South bank on the Yarra towards the Southgate precinct I wondered how my old market was faring these days.

They were still setting up when I arrived and apart from a change in logo and marquee design the signature heritage green tablecloths were still there. Although my original neighbours and friends were gone many of the regulars that have been there for years were still there.

Now really pitched to the tourist crowd there were still some stand out Indie artists and designers there. Matt Irwin’s photography has a really hip feel to it – capturing the now light and art filled alley ways of Melbourne. He also does some classic black and white shot’s of Melbourne icons which makes you really want to have more time to explore this interesting city.

Rosie from Retroville caught my eye as I moved down the first aisle next to the river. Her larger than life Softies were too hard to resist. Butthole Barry and his friends all sport gathered...um well buttholes – very cute and really well made.....not to mention innovative. Rosie works full time and so dabbling in the Markets every third week is enough to keep her passion for handmade afloat. We talked Etsy but as yet this is still in the realm of big, somewhat scary and time consuming for her at the moment.

Crikey I remember when they were my barriers as well and it really made me realise just how far I’d come in the last 12 years since I had set up my stall there juggling fulltime work and just getting out and doing what I loved doing.

After the last couple of easier days at work Sunday proved to be a very long 10 hour day ( MEL/SYD/MEL/SYD/BNE) to finally get home.

My mind was abuzz with excitement at the thought of BrisStyle’s own upcoming Indie Designers Market on Saturday July 4^thand conviction that we will be delivering a Market totally unique to all the others that are out there at the moment in Brisbane – a Market still with a lot of style but also a lot of soul because the designers share a bond from their online friendships.

Here’s to many more mystery days at work that lead me on another “handmade” discovery tour!

It's been a few weeks since the Stitches and Craft show but there are still a few "must have" goodies that I still haven't played with yet and some that have only just been gifted. Here is the start of my retail therapy, post-show shopping spree...

I'll start my journey at Miss Justine's from MixTape . Here she is with Miss Trish from Trishalan. They are both cacking themselves as when Trish went in for the shot she missed her footing and slid down the wall into this position! Oh my!

Now MixTape is a little zine that I love to savour - actually have you caught the thread - I really like to savour all the great things in life as long as I can! So I keep all my copies of MixTape on hand so I can go back and read all the different stories when I want to chill out into crafting land. Here are a few copies I had on hand for my train trip into the show each day.

So when my subscription ran out, naturally I had to resubscribe! Low and behold when I did Miss Justine had some fabbo gifts for me! My very own pair of buttons so I really can scream - "I love MixTape" wherever I go.

AND a swatch of KOKKA fabric with the most adorable design and oh so soft! Oh Bernina are we going to make sweet things with this!

So now I will await - savour even - the arrival of my next copy in June - Oh Joy! I can't wait though for the reactions at work when all the other hosties are pouring over the glossies and I whip out my lil' zine! Viva the crafting revolution!

Oh and I couldn't leave without the now famous MixTape DIY Badges for Kids!
They are now on in the hot little hands of my nephews and niece in Hong Kong!

Bondi or bust - a Mothers Day Adventure

What a treat it was to be called out for a Sydney overnight last weekend and catch up with my Mum, Noeline for Mother's Day (and a slightly belated Birthday). After a night of catching up and unveiling my booty for the family from the S&C show ( see the next post) We headed off to Rose Bay for a Mother's Day breakfast.

Mum was born in this very house in the front room on the right in Rose Bay... 75 years ago. Not far from the bay, her Dad, Charlie, used to walk down with her and they would have benders ( toast cut into strips) on the beach - A rather good name for a cafe I reckon - Benders on the Beach!

Then we headed off to Bondi Markets on a bit of a pilgrimage. Apart from being avid market goers from way back I also used to have a regular stall there several years ago. Not much had changed still a good mix of Vintage and handmade - although being around exclusive Handmade Markets and Shows recently, really made the imported content stand out.

So proud to be part of the BrisStyle handmade revolution in Brisbane.The Brisstyle Indie Designers Market will definitely take the crown as THE Hottest place for handmade in Brisbane when it's officially launched in Brisbane on July 4th!

The Young Designers Market at Southbank in Brisbane ( which is run by the same great people who run the Bondi Markets ) should be proud that they really have a point of difference from its Sydney counterpart. With over 10 BrisStylettes being showcasesd at the next one it's certainly going to be a champion for Handmade as well as BrisStyle.

The Handmade Expo is taking the Western suburbs of Brisbane and country areas by storm! Run by Mother and daughter team, Miriam, Liesa and Micky - their exhuberant passion for promoting and unearthing local talent is embracing Queensland's love affair with Handmade as well.

With all bases covered, QLD is set to bring back to Market scene of old and ignite that old passion for supporting the artists and designers at agrass roots level.

Ok off my high horse now and back to our adventure......

Oh BTW the jumper above was a great retro find from the sprawling preloved stall in the centre at the back. Stay tuned for more finds in later posts as well.

After our lil' trip to Bondi we then headed down to Rushcutters Bay Park for a well deserved cuppa and the most divine rhubarb, yoghurt and honey compote - yummo.

Mum used to play sport down here in Rushcutters Bay Park when she went to Ultimo Technical College.

She's very proudly wearing a Kristen Doran Matryoska doll Brooch from the Stitches and craft Show in Brisbane.

Here's a somewhat fuzzy shot of one another fab Brooch this time from from Betty Jo Designs. Being a very BIG brooch fan, Mum loved this special Birthday gift too (direct from Liz Jones the designer at the Melbourne Stitches and Craft Show this time.)

I'd just seen a girl on a flight wearing the most amazing Betty Jo bird necklet and low and behold when I arrived at the Melbourne show Liz was there. Of course I had to have this particular Brooch as mum is an an avid painter and lover of anything big,bold and novel. That's why we call her Novelty Noel.

Thanks Mum for another lovely adventure out together - here's to many more.

This is Gem and she is a medical assistance dog for the lovely BrisStylette Eliza of Elven Hair. Little Gem had an operation on her knee yesterday and is recovering well with a special homemade chicken soup!

For those of you who are pet owners you'll know that Vet fees can be a stinger so Eliza is having a fundraiser to cover the costs as well as a giveaway on her blog.
So If you have a spare moment please pop over to Eliza's shop to help out and/or spread the word about Gem.

I've just popped over to Eliza's Etsy shop and purchased the most grooviest hairstick. At the last BrisStyle meet up Eliza showed me how easy was to twirl the stick and secure it with ease so as you can imagine I'm looking forward to experimenting with a few new do's

Up Up and Away... with the fairies!

Well it's been along while between teas and coffees and cupcakes but I'm finally back home!

Thank you for all your lovely messages - I'll be more with it in the morning to do answer them and do a bit of a weekly wrap.

To get an indication of how I'm feeling after my trip then take a look at the brunette in the middle, the one about to fall off her perch - yep you guessed it that's me! Sad but true that fixed smile is about to fall off as well... but I definitely have more control of my netted underskirt (what the?) than this girly does.

Good Grief what were they thinking when they designed that uniform. Flammable, flirty and far out comes to mind...possibly handmade though which could offer a quirky twist? Oh who am I kidding - time to take my delirium off to rest and recuperate before I really go off with the fairies.

Withdrawal Post #1 - Neighbours

Ok I guess this isn't really going to be any great shock to you all, least of all me but here I go ......

My name is Helen and I'm a craft-a-holic!

Right, now that I've got that off my wardrobe re-fashioned chest I think that gives me licence to gab on about my withdrawal symptoms. What better place to start than with my two neighbours from the Incubator.

Here is the Queen of the Apron Nation herself Louise Stewart from Made by Miffy. Return of the housewife - c'mom return of the Rockstar! Pink eat your heart out this chick can fill the house with the promise of more than a cheap a "frill"! If you missed her in Brissy ( yeah right) then Loiuse will be rocking the kitchens' of Sydney town as she takes her "apron in an hour" and "no sew fabric flowers" on an interstate tour. Grab your tickets as the tour is selling out FAST!

Here are some of my gorgeous gifted goodies straight from the Miff herself - My leopard print wrist key chain - grr.

And my very special no sew fabric flower hair clip.

My other amazing Neighbour was Thea from Thea and Sami . My goodness where is she? Probably off doing a screen printing demo ( sans water)! There is a great pic of her over at the very lovely Megan from Blossom child's Blog.

What a wonderfully warm and talented designer Thea is. I fell in love with her fabric especially those with a Queensland theme - the Story Bridge Skirt really made my happy Australiana lovin' heart sing! I was so lucky to get my hot little hands on one of the last pieces of Thea's "Pineapple" fabric.

This is a fabbo Navy and Lime green apron that I nabbed for my sister Amanda who lives in Hong Kong and is redecorating her Kitchen next month.

Thea's 1930's dress makers model Judy, got so many comments. She is modelling one of Thea's most sought after fabrics Marguerite. One of the comments came from a school girl who was intrigued by the Judy and asked Thea if she was around in the 1930's!? "Yeah right" said Thea gasping! I think she would be the star of the "Fountain of Youth Show" peddling her secret of looking so amazing at, what would that make her... 79?

The other comments came thick and fast about the bag that you can see in the pic. The stunning peacock fabric was designed especially for ex Morningsider now Melbournian Lyssey May
to adorn her signature bags which everyone wanted to take home with them.

Well even though I'm not with my Neighbours this week they are only a blog away. ( Well actually Thea is really only a few streets away) I'm really looking forward to keeping up with their latest designs and directions.

Day 1 - Opening Day.

DE - lirious! Absolutely delirious! Coach loads of crafters from near and far, Amazingly talented and super friendly local and interstate stallholders, Beautiful BrisStylette stallholders and volunteers, BrisStyle blog fans and many many more made it an incredible first day at the Brisbane Stitches and Craft Show!

Thank you to everyone for all their warm wishes and for introducing themselves and talking about their own practices - amazing!

The new range of vintage and preloved button earrings proved a big hit with the Indie and traditional crafters ready to add some recycled bling to their day.

"Make Your Own Recycled Swish" kits were the hot items of the day too- Go Go button earring Kits, Go Go button Bags, T-shirt transfers and domino brooch kits proving a raving success!
As always the fascination fell on the Go Go rings - the new fabric covered vintage buttons as well as the remodelled vintage clip on earring rings being the most popular. (I'm off to make some more right after this post!)

but the stars of the show were the new Scooter range. So I'll be prepping some more of them tomorrow as well for the crowds that are expected this weekend.

Once again thank you all soooo much for all the txts,posts and emails - your warm and fuzzies sure got me through today xox

Ready to roll....

Ok well we are pretty much ready to roll off to the Stitches and Craft Show at the Brisbane Convention Centre today to set up Scooter Girl and her friends weehee!

The resin necklets have come together beautifully - lots of texture and depth - very modern but still with a distinct vintage feel. I modelled them on a design of two necklets that I wore (and still have) in the 70's. They are designed to sit just on your decolatage although I've added a chain at the back so they can be lengthened.

The brooches too are really nice and chunky with each one being hand carved like the necklets. Two sizes for these - one for the bold brooch wearer (like my mum) and the other as a more subtle pin.

I'll have lots of pics from the show to show you all the other Ruby 2 goodies - especially my new fabric covered vintage button rings and earrings!

Time to get really excited as the Stitches and Craft show hits Brissy town!

There is so much going on this week everyday that you'll need to get a week long pass! If you're not into the extreme sport of being a craft groupie then hit the Show this Friday and Saturday for the highlights.

The last week has seen me jetsetting away from the crafty expanse that is my home in Brisbane. Although I can't stand putting on hold all my "making" for the Stitches and Craft Show here is Brissy, I do love going to work to see what the day and the people have in store for me.

This trip I seemed to have gone through Perth, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne too many times that my head was spinning when I'd finished work (no wonder that Braniff Hostess has her head in that bizarre bubble contraption! - he he ) It was a great trip though - fantastic crew and really lovely passengers returning home from their Easter holidays.

I did a few calculations when I was standing at the top of the gate farewelling passengers on my last flight. Hmm seeing that the plane was packed each flight then that meant that I would have farewelled about 1000 people just in that day! Not to mentioned offered them all a cupcake or two and a cup of tea etc. How cool. Now if only I could find a way of giving them all an invite to the Stitches and Craft Show AND the Bristyle Indie Designers Market - he he!

Intoxicatingly Bigger!

There's something about preparing for a Market that has always been intoxicating to me - and no there is no refined sugar in sight to explain my condition! So as the clock ticks by closer to the Stitches and Craft Show so my organisation and
passion gets in "the zone".

So my first stop when I got home was straight to Scooter Girl to get her ready for her debut at the show - every gal needs to ensure she's just right before a big "Do"!

Many of you know that I have played around ...with resin for the past 15 years in many shapes and forms. Every time I think that I am going to have the strength to leave my lovely resin behind and start something new the lure of it draws me back.

For this series I really wanted to use some of my traditional methods of iceblocking but give them a more solid feel. So I icelcblocked them in a deep textured tray to get the desired result. ( hmm yep desire - always needed when rekindling a relationship!)

So here are some of the girls ready to roll. As soon as I've finished this post I'll give them the attention that they deserve and transform them into 70's style necklets, brooches and earrings!

Ooh the nips are getting bigger!

Actually the days are drawing closer to the show...... the Stitches and Craft Show in Brisbane that is. My preparation is right on track - although I know that there will be the normal amount of cramming at the last minute. It's the strategy that I always apply to my 6 monthly Emergency Procedure exams at work and it always works a treat - not to mention get the adrenaline flowing.

The most exiting thing that I'm working on at the moment is the launch of my new"Scooter Girl" range. After winging the design of the image (hand drawing and then a crash course in the finer points of photoshop and Ai) Scooter girl was ready to roll. She was first laser cut into my jewellery stand for the Markets as seen above.

The response to the stand has been overwhelming so I ran with my idea of creating a whole range. The T-shirt design has been a huge hit so this will now be available in a DIY T-shirt Transfer Kit. This pic shows my first run printed on pre-loved tees.

The other is the greeting cards and tags (not shown) which are printed on recycled card and paper and which will also feature at the Show.

So stay tuned for more new Scooter Girl creations in the next few days.
